I just came back from the best two weeks of my life on CLTC 4, where I made lifelong friends and lasting memories. However, on the way to Newark Airport, I was freaking out. I was so nervous because my sleepaway camp had always been my home away from home, and to go somewhere unfamiliar scared me. But I can confidently say that Poyntelle, PA, gave me a feeling of belonging and a sense of self.

Here’s the truth—there is no point in comparing your sleepaway camp to CLTC or any other BBYO summer program because it would be like comparing apples to oranges. But that doesn’t mean one is better than the other. To me, these were completely different experiences, and I absolutely loved both and would recommend them to anyone interested in becoming a better leader and wanting to explore their Jewish identity.

BBYO summer programs give everyone camp-like experiences with Rikkudim (Israeli dancing), friendship bracelet making, tie-dye, Friday night services, and so much more. But BBYO summer programs also include mock chapters, Israel education, leadership network opportunities, Chapter Con, insight on MRIHA, and more skill-building activities.

As a camp kid, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at CLTC because it was my two favorite things combined—camp and BBYO. I finally grasped the concept that we are an international Jewish youth group whose goal is to keep Jewish kids invested in Jewish life, to continue our Jewish lineage. I also understood why globalization is so important, and these two ideas are something I wouldn’t have learned if I was at my sleepaway camp.

So yes, BBYO summer programs are not the same as your sleepaway camp, but they are so valuable and give you the power to continue to build this movement.

Submitted with undying love for CLTC 4, Shoreshim BBG #35, Bunk 4, the Irish, baddies in the IDF, Hamilton rap battles, flim, mystery meat, BBG energy shakeout, coffee grinders, Michael’s biggest fan, no Hoboken accent, and broken hammocks,

I forever remain,
